Desert Dreaming

Last night I dreamed of the desert
White clouds massing in an azure sky
Mountains, purple, rising like a mirage
From the vastness of heat-shimmered vistas

Last night I walked the Spiritlands
Felt the gaze of the Ancients
Read the language of the rocks
Even as the knowing faded…

Last night I dreamed of home

The painting began as a mere exercise in a loose technique and a level of abstraction that I wished to try. The technique showed promise, but I was soon drawn away to other projects that seemed more worthy of my attention. I put away this very unfinished experiment, and forgot about it.

But while working on some of the Spiritlands paintings, I stumbled upon the abandoned canvas and realized it had potential to be part of the collection. I knew I’d made the right decision as to its resurrection when the vision came into focus and the paint flowed effortlessly.
